Vita--Just The Facts

Background:

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio. Oldest of 7 children. Moved to Los Angeles, California at age 11.

Studied art at San Fernando Valley State College at Northridge, 1964-67.

Taught preschool in L.A. City Children's Centers, 1967-68, 1969-70.

Received B.A. in Human Development, Elementary Teaching Credential and Parent Education Credential from Pacific Oaks College in Pasadena 1974, M.A in 1978.

Moved to Sierra Nevada Mountains in East central California (near Yosemite) 1974.

Substitute teacher, elementary grades, 1974-75.

Taught third grade at Columbia Elementary School, Columbia, California, 1975-78.

Sold my first book, Taste the Raindrops, to Greenwillow Books in November of 1981. It was published on Valentine's Day, 1983. I have been doing this ever since, with more than sixty books that I have written and/or illustrated.

Moved to Milford, Pennsylvania in 1990, because of husband's job. Provides in person access to publishers in New York City.

Moved to Gualala, California, November 2001.

Husband:

Gary, after 33 years as a unique U.S. Forest Ranger, is now writing, performing his Gifford Pinchot program, and persuing other creative adventures full time.
 

Daughters:

Bethany, born 1968, married to Robert Mann, avid mountain biker. Son Jacob was born October 12, 1995 and they live in the mountains north of Santa Cruz, California.  Bethany is a crafter, seamstress, blogger and avid thrifter and re-visualizer of used materials. Her work has been featured is several books by Lark and she is co-author along with sister Sarah of Show Off, a how-to book for kids.

Sarah, born 1971, married to Nathan Stephens, storyboard animator for movies and TV commercials. They are the proud parents of Emmett Wise Stephens born May 1, 2001, and Violet Grace, April 8, 2004. Sarah is the auhtor of many children's books, some under her own name and others not, as well as foudner and teacher of a wonderful garden program at her children's elementary school in Oakland, California.

Lassen, born 1979, married to Brian Hinch, both of them graduates (as is son-in-law Nathan) of Rhode Island School of Design, June 2001. Brian is a partner in Tellart a creative design company and Lassen is right-hand person to a rep for children's toys, books, clothing and gifts. She also paints wonderful murals, usually for children's rooms. They live in Berkeley, California.

Goals:

To create books that touch the hearts of young people and those who interact with them, and to do all I can to help create a peaceful, loving, life-sustaining world.

Hobbies :

Gardening, knitting, doll and stuffed toy making, reading--particularly books on spirituality and the human potential, and helping my grandchildren with their creative projects.
